Trinidad has hardly changed for more than a hundred years.
In 1514, Trinidad became the third settlement to be founded on Cuba by Diego Velazquez, as a base for exploiting the surrounding mountains for gold.
But its heyday came in the first half of the 19th century, when it was one of Cuba's most important centers for the slave trade and sugarcane industry.
Yet decline, brought about by the abolition of slavery, the destruction of plantations in the independence wars, and the emergence of big new estates elsewhere on the island, followed swiftly.
